excellence
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra possesses an incalculable wealth of talent , dedication , and artistry — it is hardly an exaggeration to say that our roster features some of the world ’ s most virtuosic musicians .
Each year , the BSO celebrates its incredible musicians by inviting them to step into the spotlight as featured soloists . The 2024-25 season will offer three such performances : Concertmaster Jonathan Carney performs Glazunov ’ s soaring Violin Concerto ; Principal Bassoon Harrison Miller plays Rota ’ s cinematic Bassoon Concerto ; and Principal Tuba Aubrey Foard takes on Wynton Marsalis ’ jazz-infused , genre-bending Tuba Concerto .
This season , BSO Music Director Jonathon Heyward takes this theme to an ambitious new height , highlighting a little-known genre that makes a huge impression — Concertos for Orchestra . As the name suggests , these pieces channel soloistic virtuosity through the tremendous , inspiring sound of a full symphony orchestra spotlighting individual sections within the ensemble . Don ’ t miss Bartók ’ s Concerto for Orchestra , Lutosławski ’ s Concerto for Orchestra , and the world premiere of James Lee III ’ s Concerto for Orchestra , commissioned by the BSO .
Finally , the BSO prides itself not only on its musical prowess , but also its versatility . The sheer diversity of programming offered this season reflects an orchestra that can deftly maneuver between genres , styles , and themes — aimed at serving our varied and vibrant audiences .
