Fresh off her role in the celebrated Metropolitan Opera production of Terrence Blanchard’ s Fire Shut Up in My Bones, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra welcomes Angel Blue, one of the opera’ s stars who“ soared impressively”( The New Yorker),“ bringing her luminous soprano voice and unforced charisma”( The New York Times). Barber’ s Knoxville and Rachmaninoff’ s Second Symphony bask in the beautiful, bittersweet glow of nostalgia, while Janáček’ s The Cunning Little Vixen shines in all its fantastical glory under the baton of the accomplished opera conductor Oksana Lyniv.

Tchaikovsky wrestles with eternal themes of love and fate in his Shakespearean tone painting. All the romance and grandeur that Rachmaninoff piled into his glorious Third Piano Concerto emerge with stunning clarity and authenticity in a performance by Olga Kern, the Russian pianist with familial ties to Rachmaninoff and the winner of the prestigious Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition at 17. Music Director Laureate Marin Alsop memorializes the late Christopher Rouse, a cherished collaborator and Baltimore composer who channeled Mahler’ s all-embracing scope in this symphonic swan song.
