STILL In Memoriam: The Colored Soldiers Who Died for Democracy SHOSTAKOVICH Violin Concerto No. 1 BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 5
Music Director Laureate Marin Alsop returns with the astonishing violinist Augustin Hadelich for a program that celebrates the redemptive power of creativity. Beethoven’ s Fifth Symphony turns mere notes into articles of faith, charting an iconic course from darkness to light. The Violin Concerto that Shostakovich wrote after Stalin’ s death revels in the freedom of self-expression. Amid the pain of World War II, Still memorialized his fellow Black Americans and their long-overlooked sacrifices.
VIOTTI CONDUCTS THE RITE OF SPRING
FRI, JAN 6, 8 PM
LORENZO VIOTTI, CONDUCTOR
BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 6,“ Pastoral” STRAVINSKY The Rite of Spring
For Beethoven, nature was a place of spiritual renewal, and his“ Pastoral” Symphony offers his listeners a timeless escape into that idyllic realm of peacefulness and purification. Stravinsky’ s elemental ballet takes a darker look at the life-cycle of the planet, with jagged rhythms and frenzied dances that imagine an ancient pagan sacrifice. The young Swiss conductor Lorenzo Viotti, with his athletic grace and history as a jazz and funk drummer, keeps the orchestra and audience on the edge of their seats in these restless scores.
