Making Headlines

Building on the historic appointment of Jonathon Heyward as our 13th Music Director , much of the 2022-23 season was focused on the future : launching Jonathon ’ s inaugural 2023-24 season and building excitement for the new musical journey ahead .
In February , we curated a season announcement event unlike any other , embracing an Open House feeling by featuring Jonathon in conversation with WYPR ’ s Tom Hall , and in action leading small ensembles of BSO , BSYO , and OrchKids students .
In addition to positive artistic reviews , the stories that captured hearts , minds , and coverage across the season were our expanding “ For All ” strategies — new partnerships and presentations at the Meyerhoff , and free concerts across the City and around the State .
“[ Heyward ] has an ear for nuance , a savvy sense of programming , and an immediately endearing presence onstage . Now he has an orchestra , and we ’ d do well to keep our ears on it .”
ARTS CRITIC MICHAEL ANDOR BRODEUR REVIEWED JONATHON HEYWARD ’ S MAY PERFORMANCE AT THE MUSIC CENTER AT STRATHMORE
“ If you could build the perfect Baltimore Symphony Orchestra maestro in a lab , they might look a lot like Jonathon Heyward … The world is taking notice — on the heels of his appointment as BSO music director , he was named the conductor of Lincoln Center ’ s famed Mostly Mozart orchestra ( don ’ t worry , it ’ s a summer program that won ’ t interfere with his BSO duties ). Luckily , we got him first — and hopefully for a long time to come .”
