Inspired by the dangerous conditions endured by young women who worked in match factories in the 1880s , Hannah Kendall ’ s The Spark Catchers opens the program , followed by a dramatic performance of Beethoven ’ s Third Piano Concerto by master pianist Benjamin Grosvenor . To close , the orchestra performs Shostakovich ’ s enigmatic Symphony No . 15 for the very first time . A work that alludes to and quotes freely from the music of other composers , the shimmering final chords will leave you transfixed .
