“ One of the most accomplished music directors currently on the podium of an American opera house ” ( Opera News ), James Conlon presents two of the most famous voices in opera , soprano Christine Goerke and bass-baritone Greer Grimsley . They join the BSO for a Wagner spectacular featuring “ Ride of the Valkyries ” and the final scene of Die Walküre . The program also features Beethoven ’ s light-hearted Symphony No . 8 .

Inspired by the dangerous conditions endured by young women who worked in match factories in the 1880s , Hannah Kendall ’ s The Spark Catchers opens the program , followed by a dramatic performance of Beethoven ’ s Third Piano Concerto by master pianist Benjamin Grosvenor . To close , the orchestra performs Shostakovich ’ s enigmatic Symphony No . 15 for the very first time . A work that alludes to and quotes freely from the music of other composers , the shimmering final chords will leave you transfixed .

Called “ one of the most insightful violinists of his generation ” by The Boston Globe , Stefan Jackiw performs a new violin concerto written expressly for him by noted pianist and composer Conrad Tao . Ukrainian conductor Kirill Karabits interprets two contrasting symphonies . Stravinsky ’ s Symphony in Three Movements was written shortly after he moved to the U . S . and draws inspiration from World War II . Rachmaninoff ’ s poignant Third Symphony was written in exile in America and reflects his memories of the old Russia .

The program also includes the tone poem Dust Devils by Canadian-born composer Vivian Fung and Debussy ’ s Nocturnes , the ultimate impressionist work capturing the beauty and wonders of planet Earth .
