OrchKids performed 55 concerts across and beyond Baltimore City including collaborations with the BSO , the Spring Celebration Concert at the Meyerhoff , as well as stand alone performances such as the 40th District Night Celebration in Annapolis , Baltimore City ' s annual Monument Lighting , the International Coalition of Girls School Conference , and a special evening with senior elected officials from across the country .

More than a music lesson , BSO OrchKids helps students develop musical and social skills that are transferable to all areas of their lives including creativity , self-expression , and teamwork .
In total , 1,800 + students ( Pre-K – 12 ) engaged in no-cost , in-school and after-school programming during the academic year across seven dedicated sites , drawing from more than 50 Baltimore City ( and beyond ) schools . Of total enrollment , 250 students participated in after-school instruction , with all students receiving weekly private or small group lessons with an OrchKids Teaching Artist .
Beyond the academic calendar , OrchKids found ways to keep our students supported , learning , and making beautiful music . We held our first ensemble intensive day , an initiative to convene program on days when school is otherwise closed and bring students from across Baltimore together . In July , 123 students participated in the third summer session at Goucher College . At the same time , 31 students were accepted to and attended prestigious summer programs across the country . An ongoing testament to the deep ties within our OrchKids community , 14 current and former OrchKids students were employed by program during the academic year or summer .
Our 16th year in operation , we also embarked on a new multi-year investment in evaluation with partners at Cultural Crossings Consulting to better understand , communicate , and support the many influences OrchKids has on participants , partners , and stakeholders . We began this process by harvesting outcome statements , finding statistical significance behind 281 unique “ outcomes .” For students , 63 % of these outcomes focused on social emotional learning skills , especially self-management and leadership .
With new data behind us , and the news of a first-time federal grant to expand instrument inventory in hand , OrchKids also made strategic investments in its teaching artist staff and developed a new multi-year expansion framework to serve more students across more parts of Baltimore .
