In 2011 , OrchKids students shared the stage with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under Marin ’ s baton – their first appearance on a BSO subscription program .

Opportunity

Our future can only flourish by inspiring young people who will one day lead us themselves . To be a truly exceptional resource in our community , Marin felt the BSO had to be social advocates for those children . With the seed of that belief , and with $ 100,000 of her own funds , Marin founded a new after-school mentoring program in 2008 , BSO OrchKids . The program has since grown from one grade in one classroom , to 2,000 students across ten Baltimore City schools .
What sets OrchKids apart is its focus on creating social change and nurturing promising futures - in music and in life . To do this , Alsop insisted that the BSO must meet its future , in the classrooms , communities , and homes of the children of Baltimore who might not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy and practice classical music .
Marin understood that being the first , or one of very few people who look like you in musical spaces , can be discouraging . However , with mentorship and support , students can fearlessly face these challenges and be instruments of change in the industry and in our community . Marin ’ s legacy is one of removing barriers not only for people like herself , but for all others ; with OrchKids ’ success , the BSO is honored to continue this vital program .
Music has the power to change lives . When you make a contribution , you can ensure that the BSO continues to connect with the people in your community , and help everyone find meaning and joy in music :
We can ’ t gather in person , but we can SHOW UP AS A COMMUNITY for Marin and the BSO .
Excellence – Gifts create programs that use music to ignite joy , inspiration , and creativity . New partners , diverse composers and artists , music from living composers , and Marin ’ s return as Music Director Laureate and OrchKids Founder will accompany the search for our next Music Director , with an emphasis on these values .
Inclusivity – Everyone should have the opportunity to imagine themselves on the stage or being heard , and with support the BSO will continue to advance the work that Marin has long championed , bringing diversity , equity , and inclusion to all we do .
Leadership – Giving creates and continues programs that bring everyone closer to the music , BSO musicians , and each other . Now more than ever we must build personal connections through music , in our concert halls and virtually .
Imagination – Free and low-cost initiatives provide critical access to powerful concert and educational programming , and are supported completely by donors .
“… a formidable musician and powerful communicator ”
