Inclusivity

What does it mean to be the first ? It requires imagining a different world and fighting to make it so . For women everywhere , the BSO ’ s appointment of a woman as Music Director meant they no longer had to imagine someone like themselves leading an orchestra . For Marin , it was a chance to swing the doors of opportunity wide open in the fight for equity .
Marin has been able to turn her podium at the BSO into a platform to mentor and recruit mentors for emerging young conductors . Conductors from both the BSO-Peabody Conducting Fellowship ( founded in 2008 ) and the Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship ( founded in 2002 for talented women conductors ), have have appeared on the podium at the BSO , joining our artistic story .
Beyond paving a path for others to wield a baton , Marin has welcomed artists and partners from around the world to
share performances , compositions , and other talents with the BSO with a view of inclusion . She even brought an entire festival — Women of the World , originally held at the Southbank Centre in London — to Baltimore , creating a central gathering place for women and girls during three packed days of panels , and workshops . Projects like these raised the profile of the BSO as an organization exploring its mission to be a resource — and not just a musical one — for the community . This mindset will continue to attract bold visionaries and doers who can pick up her torch to use music as a vehicle for change .
Marin showed the world what it means to be a “ first ” in the music industry . We will continue to take bold action , for everyone to see themselves reflected and represented on our stages or in our programs , and creating the opportunities necessary for others to pursue their own dreams .

Imagination

Among the strongest values Marin instills at the BSO is a sense of responsibility to our community . She led the creation of programs that created access , education , and understanding .
Marin furthered the musical journey for old and new members of the BSO family , from the founding of OrchKids ( see feature ), to the Rusty Musicians and BSO Academy initiatives for amateur adult musicians . These programs created meaningful opportunities for musicians of the community to forge personal connections with BSO musicians - at both our homes . Rusty Musicians premiered at The Music Center at Strathmore , and the Academy has welcomed amateur musicians from
