The students of the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestras ( BSYO ) come together for the first time during the 2020-21 season in a showcase of works they have rehearsed remotely over the season . Music Director Marin Alsop conducts the most advanced ensemble , the Youth Orchestra .
Launched in 2012 , the BSYO comprises three orchestral ensembles of over 250 of the Mid-Atlantic Region ’ s most talented young musicians . With the conclusion of Nicholas Hersh ' s tenure as Associate Conductor and Artistic Director of BSYO , Hersh passes the baton to Assistant Conductor Jonathan Rush , who will become the next Artistic Director of the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestras and the Conductor of the Youth Orchestra in the 2021-22 season .
