In Their Own Words :
NOTES FROM THE COMPOSERS
Restless Oceans by Anna Clyne
ANNA CLYNE
I composed Restless Oceans for Marin Alsop and the Taki Concordia Orchestra for a performance at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos where she was presented with the Forum ’ s prestigious Crystal Award in recognition of her championship of diversity in music . This work draws inspiration and its title from A Woman Speaks — a poem by Audre Lorde — and was composed with this particular all-women orchestra in mind . In addition to playing their instruments , the musicians are also called to use their voices in song and strong vocalizations , and their feet to stomp and to bring them to stand united at the end .
It is always a wonderful experience to hear my music come to life with Marin and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra . Marin is a dedicated advocate for new music , and I always know my compositions are realized to their full potential in her hands – she has a fantastic instinct for interpreting new music and brings a sensitivity and energy to them that is thrilling . I loved writing Abstractions for the BSO in honor of Marin ’ s dear friends Rheda Becker and Robert Meyerhoff as part of my residency in 2015-16 . Thank you , Marin !

The Battle for the Ballot by Stacy Garrop
STACY GARROP
While the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra ’ s performance of The Battle for the Ballot is the first time that the orchestra has performed one of my works , I first worked with Marin back in 2014 when she was the Music Director of the Cabrillo Festival . To see how she deftly shaped the music with the instrumentalists to make the music sing was an exceptional experience . In the summer of 2019 , when she asked what I was working on , I mentioned an upcoming piece for narrator and orchestra with texts spoken or written by Suffragists prior to the passage of the 19th Amendment . Even as COVID-19 spread across the world , Marin kept The Battle for the Ballot in mind , trying to find an opportunity to program it and to let these Suffragists ’ voices be heard once again . Of everything that I ’ ve learned thus far from Marin , perhaps the biggest takeaway of all is that curiosity , like music , is a life-long pursuit . Stay hungry to see what ’ s new , to learn what ’ s on people ’ s minds , and to figure out how we music-makers can craft thought-provoking experiences for our audiences .
