Keyona Carrington
Student Spotlight After making her conducting debut on the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall stage for a performance in honor of Marin Alsop this spring, recent OrchKids graduate Keyona Carrington began school at Towson University this fall to study music education. An alumnus of Peabody Preparatory and Interlochen Summer Arts Camp, Keyona was also awarded the Marin Alsop Citizenship Award and a scholarship by D’ Addario! Congratulations, Keyona!
Summer Successes! This summer, OrchKids hosted 100 students in a 4-week hybrid summer session, which included virtual programming Monday through Thursday and in-person programming outdoors on Fridays. Virtual programming included small group and private instrumental lessons, music theory, and composition and electronic music creation, as well non-musical classes including a social / emotional skills-centered class, daily virtual community times, mindfulness and yoga, and a middle school / high school life skills class featuring guest speakers each week. On the in-person Fun Fridays, activities included small group instrumental lessons, art activities, and collective composition.
The summer program concluded with virtual and in-person concerts, allowing students to demonstrate their musical developments, as well as perform with in-person small ensembles for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic! This concert can be viewed on the BSO OrchKids Youtube channel. In addition to the summer session, OrchKids supported 35 students in attending summer camps such as Interlochen Summer Arts Camp, Camp Encore / Coda, Archipelago Project’ s Innovation and Leadership Academy, Kingdom Flute Works, the Peabody Institute’ s Allegro Strings, the LA Phil’ s YOLA National Festival, and the NSO Summer Music Institute.
