DVOŘÁK ’ S SYMPHONY NO . 7

train . That theme , which clearly demonstrates Dvořák ’ s characteristic skill of crafting effective melodies , begins softly and ominously outlines the interval of a minor third . Introduced by the clarinets , the secondary theme in the exposition is in B-flat major . During the recapitulation , this theme will be restated in minor . After the sinister development , which features rapid modulations and reiterations of themes from the exposition , the climax of the movement unexpectedly occurs at the onset of the recapitulation . Here , the quiet opening of the primary theme is omitted , and the recapitulation instead begins with the more imposing countersubject . Throughout the movement , the instruments engage in a dialogue that is often fragmentary and abrupt .
Dvořák once again illustrates his ability to construct exquisite melodies in the second movement , which opens with a theme in the woodwinds . The entire movement has a sense of continuously flowing , improvisational melodies within a tightly-constructed formal framework . A series of climaxes
featuring march-like music for the brass and timpani are interspersed with calm sections of solemn chords in the trombones and mysterious melodies in the upper strings . The third movement opens with a pair of themes stated simultaneously in the upper and lower strings . Captivating and distinctly dance-like rhythms help the listener to easily distinguish these themes within the scherzo . The trio section of the movement contrasts the momentum of the opening with pastoral woodwind writing reminiscent of birdsongs . The height of the drama occurs when the movement transitions back to the scherzo ’ s primary theme . Beginning with a three-note cry of despair in the horns followed by a solemn , march-like continuation in the strings , the bold themes of the fourth movement bring the work to a tragic and powerful finish .
Instrumentation Two flutes including piccolo , two oboes , two clarinets , two bassoons , four horns , two trumpets , three trombones , timpani , and strings .
Musical Terms Exposition : Of the sonata musical form , the exposition is the initial presentation of the thematic material in a composition , followed by the development and recapitulation sections . Coda : A concluding section , typically extensions of the main themes . Rondo : A musical form with a recurring musical theme . Recapitulation : Of the sonata musical form , the recapitulation follows the development section and typically presents once more the musical themes from the movement ’ s opening exposition .
