700 BCE The timpani , also known as kettledrums , date back to pre-historic times , when they were made from hollowed-out tree trunks and covered with hide .
1500s The instrument was introduced to Europe during the invasions of the Ottoman Empire . They were cherished by the Ottomans and often mounted onto the back of horses and played while traveling .
