Composed by Baltimore ’ s own Kevin Puts , The Brightness of Light was inspired by the correspondence between artist Georgia O ’ Keeffe and her husband , photographer Alfred Stieglitz . Written expressly for the performers Renée Fleming and Rod Gilfry , The Brightness of Light closes the BSO ’ s The Sea and the Light program , conducted by Gemma New on Thursday , November 11 and Saturday , November 13 , 2021 . Hear the history and inspiration behind the process of composing The Brightness of Light from composer Kevin Puts .
“ We want to congratulate 2021 SOPA Excerpt Competition finalist and violinist Julian Maddox on his placement with the BSO ! Julian is a violinist from Minneapolis , MN . He began his studies at the age of six — working extensively with Sally O ’ Reilly . Julian received both his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the Cleveland Institute of Music .
‘ NAAS Audition Grants and additional programming empowered me to pursue recent career opportunities to the best of my ability ,’ said Julian , ‘ and I ’ m humbled to have been awarded this position . I am incredibly grateful to Sphinx and NAAS for their support !’
Sphinx is proud to lead the National Alliance for Audition Support ( NAAS ) and present the Sphinx Orchestral Partners Auditions ( SOPA ) Excerpt Competition . Two initiatives that aim to support and provide opportunities for Black and Latinx musicians as they seek orchestral placement .”
