Katherine Needleman
Principal Oboe Katherine Needleman won first prize in the International Double Reed Society ’ s Gillet-Fox Oboe Competition in 2003 and then their Inaugural Commissioning Competition in 2020 . This season , she gives the U . S . premiere of Ruth Gipps ’ Oboe Concerto with the Richmond Symphony , a work that Needleman found to be languishing unperformed since its premiere in London 80 years ago .
Needleman gave the West Coast premiere of Christopher Rouse ’ s Oboe Concerto ; Rouse chose Needleman to make the premiere recording with the Albany Symphony . Similarly , Needleman premiered and recorded Kevin Puts ’ oboe concerto , Moonlight , with the Baltimore Symphony . Needleman gave the U . S . premiere of Brenno Blauth ’ s Concertino as soloist and conductor with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia . During the COVID-19 lockdown , she presented a series of 11 weekly solo oboe recitals to an online audience of more than 75,000 and growing . She curates Coffee , Patisserie , and Classical Music at An Die Musik , exploring the connection between composer and performer and focusing on historically underprogrammed music .
Harrison Miller
Principal Bassoon Harrison Miller has performed with the BSO since 2017 . Guest work has included the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra , American Symphony Orchestra , Orchestra of St . Luke ’ s ,
Louisville Orchestra , New York Philharmonic , and the American Ballet Theatre .
Miller received his Bachelor of Music from the Juilliard School in May 2017 , where he studied with Judith LeClair , was the recipient of a Kovner Fellowship , and won the 2017 Peter Mennin Prize for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership in Music . The first bassoonist in Juilliard ’ s history to win concerto competitions in two divisions , Miller performed as a soloist with both the Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra and the Juilliard Orchestra .
Miller has been on faculty at the Hidden Valley Festival of Winds , Philadelphia International Music Festival , and the Interlochen Center for the Arts ’ Summer Camp . He has presented masterclasses at the Juilliard School , University of Toronto , and the University of North Carolina Greensboro .
Audrey Wright
Associate Concertmaster Audrey Wright is a multifaceted artist across solo , chamber music , and orchestral realms . She has performed with orchestras and chamber ensembles across the globe , is concertmaster of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra , and is regular guest concertmaster of the Nu Deco Ensemble in Miami . She has performed solo repertoire with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra , Baltimore Chamber Orchestra , New World Symphony , and the Cape Symphony Orchestra .
Recent performances in the greater Baltimore area include series such as Chiarina Chamber Players , Community Concerts at Second , Pro Musica Rara , and the Smithsonian
Chamber Music Society . Wright holds degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music and the University of Maryland and was a Violin Fellow at the New World Symphony . Her primary teachers include David Salness , Lucy Chapman , Bayla Keyes , and Magdalena Richter . She plays on a 1763 J . B . Guadagnini violin generously on loan from BSO Music Director Laureate Marin Alsop .
Lachezar Kostov
Associate Principal Cello Lachezar Kostov has appeared as a soloist in some of the world ’ s leading concert venues such as Carnegie Hall , the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts , Gewandhaus in Leipzig , and Oji Hall in Tokyo and was the National Winner at the 2006 MTNA Young Artists Competition .
As well as extensive international touring , he has appeared as a guest artist at the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival , La Jolla Summer Fest , and Cactus Pear Music Festival and is part of the guest faculty at the Texas Music Festival . His first commercial CD was released by Naxos in 2011 and was featured in The Strad and American Record Guide .
Kostov plays on a modern cello made by his friend , luthier Sam Matthews . His teachers include Bogomil Karakonov , Aldo Parisot , Norman Fischer , and David Grigorian ; he has appeared in masterclasses with Yo-Yo Ma , Steven Isserlis , and Bernard Greenhouse .
Kostov is also an avid single-malt Scotch whisky collector ; an aspiring runner , conductor , and pianist ; and a passionate pickleball player .
