FROM THE PODIUM
by Jack Everly
The composer Richard Rodgers had three careers during his lifetime : his collaboration with lyricist Lorenz Hart , followed by his fruitful partnership with Oscar Hammerstein II , and , after Oscar ’ s death , his time writing both music and lyrics for his own shows which were quite successful . The music he wrote for each of his lyricists was very different in style and tone , so it ’ s very interesting to put these songs together in one program and appreciate his range as a composer . You will hear songs from the lighthearted shows of Rodgers and Hart — shows that aren ’ t done anymore — and of course songs from the wonderful legacy of Rodgers and Hammerstein . There will be a lot of favorites along with a few surprises . I admit I get misty-eyed every time I conduct “ Climb Ev ’ ry Mountain ” from The Sound of Music — I can ’ t help it , these songs are so sentimental ! I love balancing a program to include things I know audiences will love and really want to hear with a bit of “ I bet you didn ’ t know this , and I think you ’ ll like it .” My hope is that this combination of familiar and new makes for a very entertaining concert .
I ’ ve known Ashley Brown since she graduated college and actually hired her for her first symphony job . Since then , I ’ ve watched her career take off and her star rise as she became the very first Mary Poppins on Broadway . I ’ m blown away by how she maintains such an exquisite voice . There is a profound artistry and depth to what she produces vocally . It ’ s not only great fun to work with her , but also a true honor .
I hope audiences will be inspired by Rodgers , Hart , and Hammerstein and have a truly enjoyable experience . This may sound superficial , but it really isn ’ t . Let ’ s face it , these days sometimes we need to lose ourselves a little and not think about daily life . These concerts offer a great way to do that .
