Harbor View Memorial Park Portland , ME
Portland Department of Parks and Recreation labels this 2.5 acre site as an “ Intown Neighborhood Park ”. Visually striking , the park features views toward the harbor framed by the highway infrastructure . The park is highighted by a mix of textures — formed concrete , cobbles , rip rap — and colors of the highway superstructure and bright shipping containers .
Park features are simple : paths sloping down the hill toward the harbor are oriented to highlight views , while open greenspace attracts dog walkers and families — visitors note that it ’ s a good place to sit with a picnic . A series of sculptures along the path look to have been created from marine industrial detritus .
Along the central path which cuts through the length of the park , the colorful ceiling created by the highway underside becomes a focus and feature . Light fixtures along this path create interesting shadowplay on the industrial canopy overhead .
