As part of China’s nationwide effort to create more livable cities, the Jiading district of Shanghai embarked on a significant endeavor to create a vibrant public realm and to restore natural systems with a new central park at the heart of its new development area. The linear park is the largest urban open space in this rapidly expanding satellite city, and serves as a catalyst for the district’s future growth. Its combination of poetic form, cultural expression, civic amenities, and ecological Jiading Park Shanghai, China restoration creates a multi-dimensional experience that will continue to be enriched over time. As a former brownfield site comprised of inefficient factory and warehouse buildings, the significantly degraded landscape suffered from severe water quality issues and lacked any biological value. Today, Jiading Park is a thriving and diverse ecosystem comprised of 100% native plant species organized to support multiple habitat conditions ranging from upland woodlands to meadows and wetlands.
