Projects like What’s Out There Maine
are complex undertakings and require
both committed partners and adequate
funding. Fortunately in Maine, TCLF had
a great partner in the Maine Historical
Society, and funding from the National
Endowment for the Arts Art Works program and the Ames Trust. The initiative was built on an extensive survey of
Maine’s historic designed landscapes,
completed over more than a decade by
the Maine Olmsted Alliance (now folded
into the Maine Historical Society), and
the commitment of a dedicated local
landscape architect, writer and
photographer, Theresa Mattor.
In order to provide better access to
the rich content that What’s Out There
Maine and other projects have generated,
TCLF has optimized What’s Out There for
iPhones and similar handheld devices
by building an interface using larger
text and images and a simpler menu
for exploring the database – and there’s
no app to download. The interface also
includes a new feature – What’s Nearby
– which allows GPS-enabled devices to
identify all What’s Out There sites within
a 25-mile radius from any given location.
With the successful completion of What’s
Out There Maine, TCLF is now working
in partnership with university landscape
architecture programs, local non-profits
and related interest groups, and landscape architecture firms to increase the
number of sites in Texas and Virginia.
