ASLA Honors
A SL A Desi gn Medal
Stuart O. Dawson, FASLA
“To recognize an individual landscape architect who has produced a body of exceptional design work at a sustained level for a period of at least ten years.”
The prestigious annual ASLA Design
Medal is being awarded this year to
Stuart Dawson, FASLA. Stu is a founding
principal at Sasaki Associates (Watertown,
MA). While playing a significant role as
a leader in that firm, he became a national leader in the landscape architecture profession.
Over his 50 year career he has been
involved in a number of award-winning
projects including the Christian Science
Plaza here in Boston.
His projects often have set new standards
in landscape architecture. His very early
work on the John Deere Headquarters in
Moline, IL, sets a modern precedent for
landscape architects creating corporate
settings outside of American cities. His
work on the Charleston Waterfront Park
(SC) won the 2007 Landmark Award.
Other urban waterfronts benefiting from
his vision include White River State Park
(Indianapolis) Boston Waterfront Park
and now the National Harbor, on the
Potomac River near Washington DC.
Still consulting on Sasaki projects, he is
also currently teaching at the Harvard
Graduate School of Design.
Since good design and built
work are the very essence or
our profession. I am honored
to receive the ASLA Design
Medal. And I’m deeply
grateful for those who came
before me, for those who
taught me, for those who
worked with me, and for my
most understanding clients,
thank you all!
Stu Dawson
