Reflecting on 2014 – 2015 academic year , the ASLA Student Chapter at Boston Architectural College ( BAC ) is proud to have actively contributed to local and national efforts , supporting the profession and student membership . Our chapter goals were organized on the concept of internal and external opportunities . Internally , our chapter focused on fostering information exchange and providing resources . Externally , our chapter focused on engaging with the design community of Boston , to achieve a greater sense of collaboration and understanding of the practice .
A pivotal moment for our chapter was when we hosted Mark Focht , First Deputy Commissioner Philadelphia Parks and Recreation and Immediate Past-President of ASLA , along with Daniel Martin , Director of Marketing at Permloc , for the ASLA Leadership Series . The visit allowed our student chapter to engage with Mark on a personal level as he shared with us his experiences , his passions , and his visions .
The dialogue he encouraged stayed with our group for the remainder of the spring semester and is driving some of the leadership choices we are making for next year . During a brainstorming session with Mark and
Daniel , we created an event that our chapter can engage with each year . Starting this September , the BAC SASLA Chapter participated in PARK ( ing ) Day . We are thrilled with this effort because we believe it allows us to develop an internal design process that converges with tactile urbanism and the transformation of public spaces .
More importantly , the BAC SASLA Chapter has benefited and deeply enjoyed participating in regional BSLA events . The Boston Chapter has organized various events which have sparked interest and allowed for our chapter members to engage with the Boston design community . Our chapter president attended the BSLA Planning Advance in the fall where student chapter presidents received input and advice on how to support and encourage student membership and involvement .
Student members also participated in the 2014 Gingerbread Design Competition at the annual BSLA Holiday Party and we took home Best in Show ! In the spring of 2015 , two members participated in the Gala Terrace Charrette at the BSLA annual Celebration Gala . This was a terrific opportunity for to design and express a spatial and programmatic concept . Responses from professionals and peers were encouraging and supportive . These events help connect student chapters with the community and really engages students with the profession in a fun and positive way .
