This residential project respects and celebrates the simplicity and ruggedness of the Maine coastal landscape . The foremost goal was to deepen meaningful connections between a family and this place . This was achieved primarily through creating a dynamic dialog between structure and landscape . Cues for the landscape were taken directly from the contextual environment and its inherent features ; “ introduced ” materials mirror the qualities and character of these existing elements . Structure and landscape share materials , physically overlapping and intersecting to form an integrated “ whole ”. Distinctive landscape spaces support a variety of activities and draw one physically , visually and emotionally closer to the outdoors . The landscape thus takes on an important role in daily life , strengthening the relationship between this family and the Maine coast .
