Channel Center Parks Boston , Massachusetts
In recent years , Boston ’ s Fort Point Channel District has attracted renewed interest from planners and developers . Recognizing the potential of Channel Center Parks to redefine the urban fabric , the landscape architect negotiated with the city and the developer to realign the site within Boston Redevelopment Authority ’ s 100 Acres Master Plan for the district . What was intended as a series of disconnected recreational fields became a broader strategy to improve public access to open space amenities and support critical pedestrian connections .
The landscape design considers the programmatic needs of the neighborhood — including children ’ s play areas , a dog run , and community gardens — in composing a lively , textured landscape that establishes a counterpoint to the harsh , flat character of the post-industrial district . Weaving together vibrant plantings , reclaimed materials , and inviting social spaces , the parks respond to the industrial heritage of the site while providing an active urban landscape that engages the local community . photo | Ed Wonsek
