Columbia Farm Chatham , New York
A disjointed agricultural landscape was sensitively redesigned to create a new sustainable farm complex with gardens and organic , year-round production orchards , integrated within a patchwork of existing walls , meadows and hedgerows . While the emphasis is on productive uses , new passive landscape spaces accommodate leisure and reflection while highlighting surrounding vistas .
Selective removal of pre-existing hedgerows underscores the inherent drama of the site , while refinements to the topography echo the broader context . New orchards , gardens and farm structures frame panoramic views to the neighboring hills .
A new residence was sited below the crest of the hill , dedicating the property ’ s highest point to a new Oak grove creating a sculptural element where the ground meets the sky . This grove provides a sheltered prospect that highlights the simple farm vocabulary of orderly orchard grids and hedgerows draped over undulating landforms connecting the farm to its broader context . photo | Jane Messinger photo | Jane Messinger
