CHARLES WALDHEIM , Honorary ASLA
Honorary membership is among the highest honors ASLA may bestow upon non-landscape architects in recognition of notable service to the profession . Since its inception in 1899 , ASLA has inducted only 175 honorary members .
Charles Waldheim , an architect , has been a champion of landscape architecture for nearly 30 years . His research dives into the complex relationship better landscape , ecology , and contemporary urbanism . Thanks mostly in part to Charles , landscape urbanism has come to be relevant in a number of different contexts in the last fifteen years . In addition to his extensive and widely referenced publications on these subjects , he has also taught hundreds of students while serving as both a professor and chair of landscape architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design . Prior to this , he was the director of the landscape architecture program at the University of Toronto from 2003 to 2009 .
Lecturing internationally to public , professional , and academic audiences , Charles is an intellectual with a unique ability to communicate and connect with people , instilling a passion in them about landscape architecture . His accomplishments as a highly visible advocate , educator , and administrator clearly attest to his commitment to and leadership of the field of landscape architecture .
His additional service as the Ruettgers Curator of Landscape at the Isabella Gardner Museum further attests to this , as it brings the best of landscape architecture to a new diverse audience . His lecture series , a new public program he conceived , are always a sellout and have greatly widened public reception and appreciation for our profession .
“ Charles is one of the few leaders in landscape architecture with the true talent to passionately and effectively articulate our profession ’ s core objectives to improve the quality of life for our communities .”
Peter L . Schaudt , FASLA FAAR , Partner , Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects
“ His approach to teaching and his capacity as an educator are of the highest quality , and his commitment to the medium and discourse of landscape architecture instills a passion in the next generation of students .” Aisling O ’ Carroll , Michal Van Valkenburgh Associates Inc .
