Special Exhibition – Not Alone: The Power of Response

This exhibition features a selection of the nearly 10,000 cards and letters that were sent to
Judy and Dennis Shepard in the aftermath of their son Matthew’s murder. The exhibition
considers the larger themes of empathy, community response and personal responsibility. At
Ford’s Theatre, Center for Education and Leadership (second floor).

Judy Shepard, Matthew’s mother, discusses her work to keep Matthew’s legacy alive through
activism and the Matthew Shepard Foundation. With Cokie Roberts. This event also will be live
streamed on YouTube.
The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later
October 6 and 20 at 7:30 p.m.
Ford’s presents two readings of this companion play to The Laramie Project. Developed as an
epilogue to the original play, The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later explores what changed in
Laramie in the 10 years after Matthew’s death. Tickets are $8.
With Charity for All: Lives Changed by Hate—FREE!
October 7 at 7 p.m.
The Washington Post’s Jonathan Capehart moderates a discussion with former Laramie
sheriff Dave O’Malley, former Jasper, Texas, sheriff Billy Rowles and members of KhushDC,
Washington’s South Asian LGBTQ community.

Followed by a Candlelight Vigil
October 11: Performance at 7:30 p.m.; Vigil at approximately 10:15 p.m.
Ford’s Theatre will donate all proceeds from the October 11 performance of The Laramie
Project to the Matthew Shepard Foundation. Tickets are available online. Following the
performance, Ford’s Theatre will hold a candlelight vigil in front of the theatre; the vigil is free
and open to the public.

This discussion focuses on the methods local and national communities have used in
response to hate crimes. Featuring Dr. Tony Banout of the Interfaith Youth Core.
