Programme Content
The Master in Globalisation and Development
approaches the phenomenon of globalisation
from an eclectic perspective, considering both
the opportunities that it creates and the threats
that it poses to development and poverty
alleviation in low and middle-income countries
at both the national and local levels.
Most of our students are engaged (or aspire to
become engaged) in development policy work,
whether professionally or as researchers. The
objective of the Master programme is to provide
these students with a solid understanding
of the globalisation phenomenon in all of its
dimensions (worldwide markets for goods and
services, capital and labour/migration, the
planetary challenge of the environment and
sustainable development). It also offers insight
and tools with which to analyse and affect the
impact of globalisation on local development
and poverty alleviation in low and middleincome countries. As such due

consideration is given to the complexity of local–
global interactions in the multifaceted arenas of
globalisation.
Successful students will be able to recognise
the opportunities presented by globalisation, in
addition to assessing and remedying the risks
and threats associated with globalisation. They
will also be able to identify and evaluate policy
and programme interventions in order to exploit
opportunities for increasing the effectiveness of
local and national development in the evolving
global context. Additional skills include the
identification and evaluation of development
