The IBC Conference Prize Awarded to Andrew Cotton and Tim Borer of BBC Research & Development

Each year, prior to IBC, a team of peer reviewers select a technical paper that advances the industry's knowledge in a concise and informative way. This year, "A Display Independent High Dynamic Range Television System" wins the IBC Conference Prize. This paper will be presented Friday 11 September at 14:00.

“This year’s winner describes a novel solution that could fundamentally influence how we perceive tomorrow’s ultra-high definition video,” said Dr Nick Lodge, chair of the technical papers committee. “In their very clear paper, Andrew and Tim explain how they brought together theory in engineering and visual psychology, along with practical experiments, to arrive at a high quality, flexible representation of high dynamic range video. This is creative technology at its very best.”

Andrew Cotton will present the paper, and Tim Borer will join him to receive the award on stage as part of the Awards Ceremony on Sunday 13 September. “We are delighted that IBC has recognised our paper on a display-independent HDR television system,” they said. “We believe that the technical solution we have presented provides the best universal approach for HDR, allowing it to rapidly become part of mainstream UHD offerings internationally.”

The IBC2015 Awards Ceremony takes place at 18:30 on Sunday evening at IBC. Always an entertaining and lively evening, the ceremony is free and open to all IBC visitors.

Additional Awards

Judges' Prize

Another award presented at IBC is the Judges' Prize. This prize may be drawn from the three nomination categories in the Innovation Awards contest, or may be another project that is of interest due to its creative, technical or commercial imagination. The 2014 Judges' Prize was awarded to FIFA TV for Advanced broadcasting and multi-platform coverage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Special Award

IBC may also, from time to time, award a special prize to a person, project or program that goes the extra mile and achieves something remarkable. For example, Wiener Staatsoper - Vienna State Opera was awarded a prize for bringing live performances to multi-platform delivery. Flying Monsters 3D, a 2011 Atlantic Productions' documentary with Sir David Attenborough was also given a special award.

Exhibition Design Awards

The Exhibition Design Awards is another category to watch. A dedicated team of judges tours the entire IBC Exhibition, choosing those who are outstanding in terms of accessibility, clarity and image. Three awards categories fall within this prize: Most Imaginative Use of Shell Scheme Space, and the Best Smaller and Best Larger Free-Design Stands.
