And the Winner is.... IBC honors ARM

The International Honour for Excellence 2015 is the highest honor IBC bestows, and this year it is awarded to a technology and its creator, ARM. The technology is something we use every day and nearly all day -- the processors in our smartphones and tablets.
ARM's technology is Reduced Instruction Set Computing (RISC) architectures. RISC-based technology means that a processor requires significantly fewer transistors than what is required by CISC (Complex Instruction Set Computing) x86 processors found in our personal computers. RISC processing means lower costs, cooler machines and lower power usage -- all necessary things for portable devices.
Simon Segars, CEO of ARM, said “We see an exciting future for the broadcast and entertainment industry as evolving technology brings new revenue streams, diversity in consumption and seamless viewing experiences across all devices.”

As with most computer technologies, there is a long history of hard work that led to today's uses. The first RISC processor was launched in the 1980s by Acorn Computer Group for use in its personal computers. They partnered with VLSI Technology for ROMs and custom chips. In the late 80s, they worked with Apple to develop new versions of the ARM core. In 1990, the design team was spun off to create a new company named Advanced RISC Machines, Ltd, later becoming ARM Ltd.
The International Honour for Excellence is awarded by the IBC Council. IBC Council Chair Peter Owen said “Mobile devices have proved a disruptive, transformative technology for the electronic media industry. Smartphones and tablets owe their existence to RISC processors. For pioneering, enabling and innovating the most advanced RISC technology, IBC is pleased to present its 2015 International Honour for Excellence to ARM.”
The award ceremony will take place Sunday, 13 September at 18:30 in the RAI Auditorium. This is a free event open to all IBC attendees. And, don't forget to silence those ARM-enabled smartphones.
