Greetings!

All of us at the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) would like to wish you a warm welcome to BroadcastAsia 2016. This year we celebrate SMPTE’s centennial, and we look forward to sharing our excitement with you during the show!

The Society now boasts 250 Sustaining Members, with Diamond SMPTE Members including Apple, Blackmagic Design, CBS, Deluxe Technicolor, Disney/ABC/ESPN, Dolby Laboratories, DTS, Ericsson, Fox Entertainment Group, Google, Microsoft, NBC Universal, Netflix, Paramount Pictures, Ross Video, SONY Electronics, Technicolor, Telstra, Turner, and Warner Bros. Individual membership worldwide is nearly 7,000, with 64 countries represented.

Within SMPTE’s Asia Pacific Region, the Society counts more than 600 members, nearly 10 percent of whom are students. This SMPTE Region includes the Australia Section and Hong Kong Section. The Australia Section was founded in 1971 and today is a leader in building ties between like-minded and guild organisations serving the media and content industries. Established in 1994, the Hong Kong Section endeavours to raise the standards of motion-imaging professionals while introducing the latest technologies, enhancing professionalism, conducting training courses and promoting cooperation among different sectors of the industry.

Both the SMPTE Hong Kong and Australia Sections, respectively, cooperate with educational institutions and local trade associations to develop professional training courses and support the local vocational education sector by promoting SMPTE Student Chapters and organised activities for post-secondary educational institutions. SMPTE in the Asia Pacific Region supports the Society’s mission with a bi-annual conference in Sydney, AU, providing lectures, training, seminars, and other useful information that assists members with continuing education while providing opportunities for valuable professional networking.

Leadership from the SMPTE Asia Pacific Region will be on hand at BroadcastAsia2016 at stand 4D2-25, to discuss membership benefits, as well as the Society’s continuing role in global standards and interoperability.

We look forward to seeing you at BroadcastAsia 2016, and at many SMPTE events this year and beyond!

Warmest regards,

Robert Seidel

SMPTE President
