Flora
Over 100 species of vascular plants are found in Broad leaf tea-tee woodlands including many orchid species. Ten plant species are known to be threatened.
Orchids
Broad leaf tea-tree woodlands support 15 species of terrestrial orchids, an extremely high number for a tropical lowland area. Keeping these habitats weed-free and maintaining appropriate fire regimes is critical to the survival of these species.
The Cardwell beard orchid and Cardwell midge orchid are very rare. The pink Kunai orchid, green corduroy orchid, lesser swamp orchid and freak rein orchid are known from only a handful of records.
Ant Plant
Ant plant, Myrmecodia beccarii, grows as an epiphyte on the trunks of the Melaleuca viridflora. It is listed as vulnerable.
The ant plant has a symbiotic relationship with the golden ant, which lives in the chambers of the plant’ s tuber. The apollo jewel butterfly lays its eggs on the plant and golden ants carry them into the chambers where they develop into butterflies.
