Fauna
Broad leaf tea-tree woodlands are home to a high diversity of native fauna and flora species:
60 birds 36 butterflies 14 reptiles 10 frogs 8 mammals
Broad leaf tea-tree woodlands provide valuable habitat for a high diversity of animals that feed on the abundant nectar produced during flowering.
Some are resident species, others migrate between patches of forest and across the wider landscape. They all play important roles in the ecological community- from pollination, seed dispersal and herbivory to predation and soil / litter turnover.
It is important for the long-term survival of many of these animals that we maintain and enhance existing woodlands and re-establish connectivity between the remaining patches of Broad leaf tea-tree woodlands and the wider landscape.
Butterflies
Invertebrates( notably butterflies) and insectivores also depend on the nectar of the Broad leaf teatree. Some of the 36 species of butterfly recorded in these Broad leaf teatree woodlands are only found in this location. Butterflies of concern include the apollo jewel butterfly( EPBC listed) and the Cooktown azure butterfly( not listed).
