Finding a Publishing Company to fit you

By Lady V

Are you looking for a publishing company to fit you and your needs? Well here are a few tips to help you find the right company for you.

1.Do Your research

With so many companies out here now, it’s easy to be overwhelmed. If you are overwhelmed start breaking it down into sections. It will take some of the pressure off of you. Networking and social media could help you out a little more to make a decision.

2.Network with those you know are with a company

Networking with your friends or other artists will help you to make a decision. They are able to give you insight on the company they are with, and tell you what their company does for you. If these companies do not offer everything you are looking for, I would not suggest you go with that company just because your friends or family is with that company.

3.Get to know the people working on your project

When you get to know the people working on your project, you gain a better idea of who they are and what they have to offer. Just because you know a person does not mean that they are the best person for you to work with. Make sure you are comfortable, and feel like you can call this company home.

4.Are you able to write or produce what you want?

Some companies have certain rules and regulations. Make sure you are free to be you. If you’re not able to write or sing what you want, they are not the company for you. You should be allowed to be you and do what you love. If you are not able to be your creative self, that is not the company for you. That is what is known to be modern day slavery. Don’t be enslaved to a publishing company who does not allow you to be free, or set multiple deadlines within a year to have your product to them. You can’t rush perfection. Timelines are important, but you should not have more than two deadlines per year.

5.Read your contract thoroughly

People will tell you everything and anything you want to hear, but contracts never lie. Read your contract thoroughly to know everything you will be receiving and how long you are obligated to this company. If you see any fine print, contact a lawyer immediately. The fine print is what gets a lot of people in trouble. If you don’t understand something, ask or contact a lawyer for further understanding and clarification.

Although there are so many do’s and don’ts for finding the publishing company for you, here are just a few suggestions to help you get through. Be safe out there when looking for a publishing company, and always make sure you go with someone who provides everything you need from a publishing company. If you refuse to do your research, you can’t be mad when you get screwed over or scammed. You make the final decision wisely and very carefully. This is your life, your livelihood, your work; don’t you want it to be the best? If you answered yes, you are on the right path to a successful career.
