Building the future as committed as ever to supporting construction companies across the region by helping them access training, develop talent and meet the challenges of a rapidly changing industry.
The construction sector is currently facing a number of significant issues. Skills shortages continue to affect projects across the country, while an ageing workforce means vast amounts of experience and knowledge are leaving the industry each year through retirement. At the same time, employers are expected to navigate increasingly demanding requirements around safety, competence, environmental performance and regulatory compliance.
The introduction of the Building Safety Act and the growing focus on competence throughout the supply chain have highlighted something many of us have known for years: training is no longer an optional investment. It is a business necessity.
This is where training groups have a vital role to play.
Construction businesses often face similar challenges, regardless of their size. They need access to quality training, competent instructors, recognised qualifications and practical support. However, organising and managing these requirements individually can be both costly and time-consuming.
Training groups provide a practical and proven solution. By bringing companies together, we can share resources, identify common needs and create training opportunities that would otherwise be difficult to deliver.
Members benefit from a collaborative approach that helps reduce costs, improve access to training and ultimately strengthen the workforce across the entire region.
One of the aspects I have always valued most is the willingness of businesses to work together for the benefit of the wider industry. Although companies may compete commercially, there is a shared recognition that developing skilled people benefits everybody.
Better trained operatives, supervisors and managers create safer sites, higher quality projects and more productive businesses.
The work of E B Training focuses on helping construction employers navigate this increasingly complex landscape. Whether supporting apprenticeships, providing access to professional development, identifying funding opportunities or helping companies understand training requirements, our objective is simple: to ensure that businesses have the skilled workforce they need, both today and in the future.
Equally important is the role played by organisations such as the National Federation of Builders( NFB). For many years, the NFB has championed the interests of construction businesses and consistently recognised the importance of investing in people. Its work in promoting skills, competence, apprenticeships and industry development aligns closely with the objectives of training groups such as E B Training.
The Federation understands that the future of construction depends upon attracting new talent while simultaneously developing the existing workforce. Through its advocacy, industry leadership and engagement with government, the NFB helps ensure that training remains at the forefront of discussions about the industry’ s future.
As someone who has been involved with construction training groups for many years, I firmly believe that collaboration is the key to success.
No single business, training provider, trade body or industry organisation can solve the sector’ s skills challenges alone. Progress comes when employers, training organisations, industry bodies and government work together towards common objectives.
The need for that collaboration has never been greater.
Our industry has always adapted to change, and there is every reason to be optimistic about the future. New technologies, modern methods of construction, sustainability objectives and digital innovation present exciting opportunities for the next generation.
However, these opportunities can only be realised if we continue to invest in the people who will deliver them.
Training groups remain one of the most effective ways of making that happen.
Reflecting on my journey from the Essex Construction Training Association to Eastern Builders Training Group, I remain proud of what has been achieved and excited about what lies ahead. The commitment shown by our members, training providers and industry partners demonstrates that there is a genuine desire to strengthen skills and create a more resilient construction sector.
By continuing to work together, support one another and invest in developing our people, we can ensure that construction remains a rewarding, professional and sustainable industry for generations to come.
