Baxall Case Study

Baxall Construction turns net zero ambition into action

Baxall Construction has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2045 and is delivering its Carbon Reduction Plan against a 2018 / 19 baseline. Carbon intensity has reduced to 0.0087 tonnes of CO₂e per £ 1,000 of turnover, a 23.2 % reduction against the baseline, while operational carbon emissions across offices and construction activities have reduced by 34 %.

To monitor and manage progress, performance is measured against the Carbon Reduction Plan and reported across the business on a six-monthly basis. Company-wide coordination is led by an in-house Innovation and Carbon Neutral working group, while offices and projects operate bespoke Carbon Reduction Plans.

Offices procure 100 % renewable electricity through a zero-emissions tariff strategy, use energy-efficient LED lighting and support lower-carbon travel through an employee electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme.
On construction sites, ConstructCO2 is used to monitor, benchmark and reduce project emissions, helping achieve an approximately 25 % reduction in construction-related carbon emissions. Through its Environmental Management System and Sustainable Procurement Policy, suppliers are required to demonstrate sustainability credentials, while 50 % of supply chain spend is targeted within a 30- mile radius of projects. Baxall also integrates Modern Methods of Construction, including PEFC-certified timber frames, to reduce embodied carbon. To support long-term performance, AI-enabled smart sensors monitor building conditions post-handover, providing data to guide ongoing optimisation and carbon efficiency.
