spooky times: a trip to southeastern louisiana university's haunted house

It’s getting spooky on Southeastern Louisiana University’s campus. SLU’s Campus Activities Board held its annual Haunted House on Oct. 29 to Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Alyssa Arceneaux has worked for CAB for five years. She states that her favorite part of being a part of the Haunted House is decorating.

According to Arceneaux, Graduate Assistant at CAB, there is a lot of creativity that goes into the event. “We start off by seeing what we already have and then we make a theme for each room,” she said.

One of the rooms for this year’s theme involves a handmade grand piano. She said it’s one of the most exciting rooms.

“We’re going to use pipes and spray paint them gold,” Arceneaux said. According to her, the room will just be creepy. “We’re printing out old wallpaper and placing it around the room.”

Last year, CAB was able to transform the Pennington Student Activity Center into a maze. Noileen Gonzales, who just joined the committee as student public relations manager, attended last year’s event.

“You couldn’t tell which part of the Rec Center you were in. It was very detailed,” she said.

According to Arceneaux, the side rooms were used at the Rec Center. This year, they are planning to use the presentation rooms at the War Memorial Student Union.

CAB has been preparing for this event since the summer. Arceneaux states that CAB does not begin hardcore planning until the middle of October. “After Gumbo Ya-ya, we start really planning for it,” she said.

From Oct. 26 to Oct. 28, the committee will build different items they plan to use for the Haunted House. Volunteers will assist the committee. “We make our own things because we don’t want to spend a lot of money on decorations,” Arceneaux said.

CAB representatives makes a different theme for each room, while keeping the budget in mind. According to Arceneaux, they use Amazon sometimes to find items.

“We use Youtube tutorials and how-to videos,” Arceneaux said. This year’s Haunted House will have a huge spider which will be made out of tin foil and wire.

Julie Entremont, former operations manager and event planner at CAB, states she enjoys setting up the Haunted House. “Even though, I am no longer a member of CAB, I am always willing to lend a helping hand,” she said.

Entremont worked for CAB for two years and designed a pirate shipwreck for one of her sections of the Haunted House. “I used two wooden pallets, a scary looking head, and plastic spiders,” she said.
