Formats for the Day
Formats for the day varied from school to school and zone to zone . Adults and children came together for ONE DAY of “ paired ” or " buddy " reading . Some schools used peer to peer reading by simply taking turns reading aloud . These read-a-louds encouraged children to share their thoughts about what they read and , in many instances showcased students special talents .
“ You go first , then I shall follow ” said an elder student to younger student who needed encouragement to read . Read for the Record day helped to create the environment for children to support each other in reading and to stimulate students confidence and responsibility to read .
Many schools read in morning assemblies while other schools dramatized stories , read books with music , participated in art workshops to portray the Read for the Record book through art maximizing participation rates .
At the Arbor School , Tranquility Government Primary School , St . Agnes A . C . School , Newtown Girls R . C . School and Nelson Street Boys R . C . School , children attentively listened to the sweet sounds of Pan by Pannist , Mikhail Solcedo while listening to story of PanMan read by Omar Lewis .
Bridge Foundation included an art component this year and requested schools to submit interpretive artwork of the stories read . The Foundation also donated Read to Rise books this year which included : “ Tilly the Turtle ” and “ Carlton the Dolphin ” by Clive Borely ; “ Squirrel Coconuts ” by Andy Campbell ; “ PanMan ” by Tarquin Lougheide and “ Tap-Tap ” by Karen Lynn Williams . Schools were also asked to donate a book to Haiti to be included in Read for the Record , 2013 .
Read for the Record in Trinidad and Tobago promotes reading as fun as a great way to learn to realize new possibilities as a jumpstart for their future to let children know that they have a partner in learning and schools know they have partner to support their literacy efforts .
