Jumpstarts Read for the Record Day, 2013 in Trinidad and
Tobago organized by Bridge Foundation
Once again with commitment, excitement,
and energy, schools throughout Trinidad and
Tobago participated in Read for the Record
Day on October 3, 2013. Bridge Foundation
for the fourth consecutive year, sponsored
Read for the Record Day and for the first
time this year. BGTT joined in and sponsored
Read for the Record day activities in Mayaro,
South-East of Trinidad and Tobago.
We recorded with the participation of 80
schools, 25,494 children reading throughout
the country.
Pictures shared in this News Brief show the
diversity of activities held on that day; all
with the purpose to create a buzz about the
importance of reading and the need to
support children as they learn in school.
Many ask why Read for the Record Day in
Trinidad and Tobago. The answer is easy and
can be answered with a question. Why not?
While all teachers are busy offering daily
instruction, attending workshops to
understand new curriculum guidelines, and
diligently working to ensure that the
curriculum is taught to standard, the Read
for the Record offers support to the teachers
and reinforces the need to inspire children to
learn within joyful spaces. Read for the
Record day declares and validates schools as
a center of learning within the communities
and the need for communities school
partnerships. On Read for the Record day,
we are constantly inspired by the gathering
of students in assemblies, reading in halls,
classrooms, and even on stage and are
reminded that students are ready and poised
to be challenged and engaged.
Each year, Read for the Record day continues
to proclaim the importance of community in
supporting our schools and our students. So,
as always, we bring stakeholders who are
representative of many institutions to the
schools to join students as they read on Read
for the mind.
It is a wonderful time of year:
to share the importance of reading;
to demonstrate to students that
reading can be fun and engaging;
to make known that their
community supports students as
they learn in school;
to offer support to principals and
teachers as they do their important
work; and
to link resources, people and
stakeholders to schools who are
willing to support schools on Read
for the Record day and beyond.
Independently, schools who participated
with Read for the Record are beginning to
experience community support and the need
for role models to support their schools. We
continue to be reminded that us that it takes
a village to raise a child.
