Add character to floors with traditional encaustic designs says Harriet Roberts
I
t’s cold living in northern Europe,
very cold. Even in the summer
months, the nightly temperatures mean
that floors become cold too. And let’s
face it, no-one likes to get out of bed
in the morning with condensation on
the windows and a freezing cold floor
underfoot, let alone get into a walk-in
shower feeling like you’re entering a
man-sized fridge. It is understandable, therefore, that carpets
have been the floor covering of choice to provide insulation as
well as comfort in our homes.
Tiles were found ‘below stairs’ and have retained their
decade-old utilitarian association, namely that they were
used to avoid water damage. Take a look at Vermeer’s
paintings to see how the most beautiful hand-painted Delft
tiles were originally used as skirting boards. Purpose first,
decoration second.
