Dr. Hamm’s
president’s desk
Man, I’m really wondering whether I picked the best year to become President of the
Schell’s Border Batch again. Face it 2020 so far has pretty much sucked. No baseball,
tearing down statues, and this damn virus. I swear if I never hear social distancing,
these uncertain times and we’re all in this together it will too soon. With everything
being cancelled our ever-present beer collectibles shows have also felt the brunt of
these rules. Just getting word recently that the annual Canvention in St. Louis has
pulled the plug is just the topping on the cake. I do understand the reasoning behind
this decision with it being the 50th Anniversary of the BCCA and all that they want to
make it a memorable occasion. With all the guidelines currently in place this wouldn’t
be possible. There does seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel however as
baseball and other sports are slowing resuming and there are a few select beer shows
starting to take place. I wasn’t able to attend but word has it the show in Cloquet was
well attended and since it was outside people were a little more apt to attend.
The other night, the President, Vice President and your Newsletter editor were
gathered at the newly formed Bird’s Nest in Winnebago having a couple when we
began brainstorming on having a beer show at the above-mentioned location. We took
into consideration of plenty outside room, a rural location, closeness of hotel
accommodations and just plain urge to have a show again. We picked a date that
would have been the weekend of the cancelled national show and started making
plans. To say things snowballed from there is an understatement. We “leaked” a small
post on social media of our upcoming plans and were absolutely amazed at the
immediate response we received from collectors who were itching to attend a beer
show again.
So here are the tentative plans. September 12th Saturday 9AM to 3PM at David
Bullocks soon to be famous Bird’s Nest in rural Winnebago MN. There will be a
hospitality night on Friday for out of town guests at the Nest with munchies and
Karaoke. There will be no admission or table fees on Saturday. Everyone will need to
bring their own tables and chairs. I have arranged bathrooms, a local food truck, a
sober cab for both nights and there are two nice hotels just 10 minutes away in the
suburbs. All indications are that it will be quite well attended as I’ve had inquiries from
quite a few out of state collectors already. Flyers are being printed up as we speak and
we will distribute around the area bars and liquor stores. Social media will play a big
part in promoting the show also. I think this has the protentional of being a every year
show kind of like the old Weekend at Wally’s years ago. Any ideas fellow members
have to further enhance the show let us know.
As some of you already know Tom and I were asked to run for the board of
directors for the parent club BCCA. Also running is our friend Jody Otto from the North
Star Chapter. Since there isn’t going to be an official show now in St. Louis voting will
be done both by mail in ballot included in your last BCCA magazine or by going on-line
at BCCA.com and casting your vote there. I’m sure I speak for everyone running for
this position that we just want to give back a little to the hobby that has been such an
important part of our lives the past years. The friends that I’ve made and the fun that
I’ve had has been priceless to me and I want to continue to help make the club
relevant in the years to come. I would appreciate your votes. Hope to see ya all at the
Bird’s Nest September 11th and 12th.
