W ell I have to admit I’ve been President of the Schell’s Border
Batch chapter for more times than I can remember and this is the first
time I’ve had to rewrite the President’s letter. My first draft of a letter was
hyping all our upcoming events scheduled for the Spring and Summer
months. Board meeting at my place, North Star chapters annual Spring
Fest and Summit show, our own Springding show at the Schell’s brewery
in New Ulm to name a few. And because of some damn Chinese virus all
of these things were canceled. It’s a hard time being a collector these
days that’s for sure. One thing that has helped me get through this is the
social media outlets such as the Facebook groups and the selling sites
like eBay. Through these venues I’m still able to keep up with the latest
news, finds and happenings in this fabulous hobby of ours. I’ve found as
a frequent seller on eBay and with my sign parts and repairs it’s been
pretty much business as usual in fact my beer sign parts business has
never been better. Apparently, people having to stay home has now given
them time to get around to repairing that sign that has laid neglected all
these months. Only problem is my print shop which is considered non-
essential has been closed and I’m quickly running out of supplies.
The biggest question out there right now is are we still going to be
able to have our annual Canvention in St. Louis in September. This one
was shaping up to be an epic event as it’s the 50th anniversary of the
BCCA and St. Louis is where it all started back in 1970. Both myself and
Tom Terwilliger have been asked to run for the board of directors of the
club and I know myself I am quite honored to do so. As I near retirement
I’d love to help give back in anyway to the club that has given so many
great times and friends and now have the time to do so. I’m sure Tom
feels the same way too. Although no longer a big can collector like I once
was I still have a passion for the hobby and would really be lost without it.
If the Canvention isn’t held it not only will be a sad time but not sure how
they will handle the elections, etc. for the incoming board members. If it
does take place, we would sure like your support to keep the hobby going
strong in the years to come. I’m saying the first show in the area after all
this crap ends will be one of the best attended in history.
So, while you’re stuck at home and no shows to go to now is a good
time to rearrange, hang new signs or just general dusting of your
collection. If it’s your thing I highly encourage to join some of the on-line
groups and contribute to them to help take up the slack of not being able
to go to shows. Most of all hope everyone can stay healthy and safe and
come out of this thing stronger than ever.
