two different concepts combined in one
Hiplet is a new form of contemporary
art invented by Homer Bryant who
is a dance teacher. The idea popped
up into his head after he visited a rap
concert. The way the rhythm is making
kids easily remember this music made
him think about the strange dance
combination. It definitely combines
‘the best of both worlds’. The dancers
of the Chicago Multi-Cultural dance
center, which is founded by Bryant, are
young girls dancing from a very young
age. Hiplet is performed in the typical
ballet look, including the pointe shoes.
For contrast, in the choreography, they
include movements grown from the
African dance culture.
These girls do not just dance, they
really find themselves in this style.
In classic ballet, there is not a lot of
diversity and most of the African-
American girls are rejected. Homer
Bryant changed this concept by
creating a whole different dance
movement and trademarked it. His
students feel free and confident with
what they are doing. There is a lot to
say about this new style, but we believe
it is truly unique and beautiful. Take a

Dancing is a form of expressing character and emotions. Since we are all different,
we all have our preferences, like different taste in music. That is also why there
are different types of dance styles like swing, classical ballet, salsa and hip-hop
for example. In this article, we would like to present you a combination of two
completely different forms of dance.
That is right! We are talking about ballet and hip-hop. I know, it sounds a little bit
like an identity crisis in dance, but hey, we all have had one of those at some point,
right?
