Love it if we made it
by the 1975
Moving on from pop-punk to alternative-rock. The next song that includes
political statements is ‘Love it if we made it’ from the British band ‘the 1975’.
The 1975 is known for being controversial since some of their songs talk
about drugs, sex and mental illness, but their recent work also expresses
how the band feels about politics. The singer of the band Matty Healy
explains in a video with Genius that he is not a big fan of Donald Trump.
‘Not a fan’ is quite an understatement. In the song, there is a quote from
president Trump that says: “I moved on her like a bitch”. Though when the
song is played on the radio, swear words get censored. “I would have to
be censored for literally quoting the leader of the ‘free world’” Healy says.
Think about that for a second.

This is America
by Childish Gambino
Not only does the next song have tons
of symbolism in the video clip, but ‘This
is America’ from Childish Gambino
also has lyrics that complements the
video and they show clearly how he
feels. The American rapper Childish
Gambino (also known as Donald
Clover) raises awareness about gun
violence in America, focusing around
gun violence against the black
community. One lyric that stands
out is right at the end of the song is:
“You just a black man in this world,
you just a barcode”, which you can
interpret to how the American justice
system sees the African-American
community as one big group, or a
barcode so to speak. Obviously, that
is not the case, but it’s a big prejudice.
You can’t treat people differently from
one another because of their race or
nationalities. ‘This is America’ is a
very controversial song and music
video, but tells the world a little bit
more about what is really going on in
the land of the free.
