BCS THE STUDENTS STORY OF A HAVE SKATE IMPACT PARK
On August 13th 2019, Council received a letter from the then recently formed Brewarrina Children and Youth
Skateboard Submission Committee at Brewarrina Central School. It was a request for a new skate park. The existing one, said the
letter, was boring and dangerous and the committee was requesting that certain government funds were used in order to build a
new one. The letter was written by four young men from Brewarrina Central School, RomanTailby, Jharal Jackson, Adam Ford
and Harrison White.
Exactly one year later, that children’s dream was realised in an unofficial opening at Memorial Park. The four boys and family
supporters, the Principal of BCS, Christine Grieves, the GM of Bre Shire, Jeff Sowiak, and Mayor Phil O’Connor, were all in
attendance.
In between the original letter and this unofficial opening, there had been petitions, allocations of government grant money, contractors
tendered and a rather speedy build in July and August this year. Designs were examined and re-examined, meetings were
had and fences were erected to keep children out during the build. Children, being children, found their way in during final stages
and were yelled at as we tried to get them to wait just a couple more weeks. It was an exciting time.
