Challenges

There are a variety of reasons that latching can be challenging . Some common reasons include poor positioning of mother or baby , a shallow latch , a lip tucked in , and clothing or baby ’ s hands in the way . Review these photos to identify the keys to a good latch and latches needing correction . See the following pages for more information on addressing challenges .
This baby is not latched . Trying to nurse with baby only on the nipple is painful and ineffective . Baby will need to open their mouth wide and take in much more of the breast .
This mom and baby are snuggled close and are both comfortable and relaxed . Baby ’ s lips are flared with plenty of breast tissue in their mouth .

Baby ’ s mouth is open wide , taking in lots of breast tissue . Their chin is at a good angle and everyone is comfortable .
Baby ’ s lower lip is tucked in rather than flared out and the latch is painful . Baby needs to re-latch .
This mother will get tired of propping herself up , and baby ’ s head is so far turned that it may be difficult to swallow . Mother needs to be supported and baby should be turned so that mother and baby are belly to belly and baby ’ s head and shoulders are aligned .
Baby ’ s lips are flared with a nice , deep latch and everyone is comfortable .
If getting a comfortable latch is difficult , seek help from a lactation professional as early as possible .
