Tandem nursing refers to nursing more than one child at a time ( such as twins or when an older child continues breastfeeding through a pregnancy and after the new baby is born ).
Discussion Prompts
• Do you need to stop breastfeeding if you become pregnant again ?
• Is it possible to breastfeed both a toddler and a newborn ?
Key Points
• Situations : breastfeeding during or throughout pregnancy , after birth ( both newborn and toddler ), breastfeeding multiples ( twins , triplets ).
• Considerations :
• Toddler and newborn : milk supply can drop during pregnancy , may be uncomfortable ( breast soreness ), feed newborn first for the first few weeks .
• Multiples : may be easier to feed one at a time in the beginning . Work to get them both latched together to cut down on time spent breastfeeding .
• Need lots of rest , hydration and additional calories to maintain milk supply .
