Tandem nursing refers to nursing more than one child at a time( such as twins or when an older child continues breastfeeding through a pregnancy and after the new baby is born).
Discussion Prompts
• Do you need to stop breastfeeding if you become pregnant again?
• Is it possible to breastfeed both a toddler and a newborn?
Key Points
• Situations: breastfeeding during or throughout pregnancy, after birth( both newborn and toddler), breastfeeding multiples( twins, triplets).
• Considerations:
• Toddler and newborn: milk supply can drop during pregnancy, may be uncomfortable( breast soreness), feed newborn first for the first few weeks.
• Multiples: may be easier to feed one at a time in the beginning. Work to get them both latched together to cut down on time spent breastfeeding.
• Need lots of rest, hydration and additional calories to maintain milk supply.
