With the advent of the Internet of Things , ageing populations around the world and the race for the next generation of robots , Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation ( HKSTP ) is taking the lead in stimulating innovation in three application areas : healthy ageing , the smart city and the application of robotics . This will unlock demand for smallscale , customised advanced production and R & D centres , that will enrich the innovation and technology ecosystem and rejuvenate Hong Kong ' s industrial base .

There are now over 600 companies , including 250 start-ups , employing more than 13,000 people at Hong Kong Science Park where 3 million sq ft of space has been developed since it was opened 15 years ago . This has been achieved by attracting technology firms engaged in research design and development in five main sectors : Biomedical Technologies , Electronics , ICT , Green Technology , and Materials and Precision Engineering .
The shift towards stimulating applications of technology which address major social and economic challenges is leading to new international partnerships being set up with foreign industry representatives , universities , and research and innovation centres such as Sweden ’ s Karolinska Institute .
The challenge for HKSTP is to build up effective international innovation networks with other players across the world who are willing to collaborate . With a population of over seven million and growing , Hong Kong offers a unique test-bed environment . Firstly , as a stepping stone to the Chinese market and also as a route to developed markets in the West . ■
