he WELL Building Standard™
was establ ished in 2015 as a
result of coordinated research
by doctors, architects and
industry professionals to
establish a rating system that recognised
and focused on a building’s most
important asset: its people.
Most costs associated with a building
are related to the people who occupy it.
Statistics indicate that the number may
be as much as 80% of a building’s cost,
with the remaining 20% spent on
infrastructure and IT.
The WELL Building Standard™
is an evidence-based system for
measuring, certifying and monitoring
the performance of building features that
impact occupant health and wellbeing.
WELL® addresses human health and
wellness through seven concepts: air,

water, light, fi tness, mind, comfort, and
nourishment. Each of these features of
WELL® has a signifi cant role in the
various systems of the human anatomy.
Architecture fi rm HOK is pioneering
the development of the WELL® Lab
concept by researching the application of
these seven WELL concepts in the design
of the research laboratory environment.
We are embracing this opportunity and
unique responsibility to advance
awareness of health and wellness design,
profi ciency, and innovation in the
scientifi c workplace. By developing
solutions that focus on health and
wellbeing, we hope to promote occupant
wellness and scientifi c productivity.
The WELL process sets out ten
challenges to address within the
context of the scientific workplace.
These are still being explored.
